Historical Context:
This medal was struck to commemorate the inauguration of William I as King of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, held in Brussels on 21 September 1815. Following the Napoleonic Wars and the decisions of the Congress of Vienna, the northern and southern Netherlands were unified under his rule. The imagery symbolises the voluntary and constitutional nature of this monarchy. The medal was engraved by Joseph-Pierre Braemt and is catalogued as Dirks 61.
