Historical Significance & Design This silver tetradrachm was struck shortly after the death of Alexander the Great, around 320–317 BC, during the regency of Antipater. Minted in Amphipolis, this posthumous issue honors Alexander’s enduring legacy and the continued influence of his empire.
Obverse: Bold portrait of Heracles (Hercules) facing right, wearing the iconic lion skin headdress—a symbol of strength and divine heroism.
Reverse: The thunder-wielding Zeus sits majestically on a backless throne, holding an eagle in his outstretched right hand and a scepter in his left. Greek legend reads "AΛEΞANΔPOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ" (of Alexander the King). A laurel branch and the letter "Π" appear in the left field and below the throne strut, respectively.
