This 20 Canadian dollar silver coin, issued in 2021 by the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, celebrates the pysanka, the traditional Ukrainian decorated egg, whose craft practice is deeply rooted in Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Canadian culture.
The pysanka is an ornamental egg decorated using a wax-resist technique, allowing the application of geometric and symbolic patterns in vivid colours. This ancestral art, passed down from generation to generation, holds an important place within Ukrainian communities established in Canada. The coin faithfully reproduces this cultural object in colour, offering a particularly detailed and chromatic rendering of the traditional motifs adorning the egg.
The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of England and the Commonwealth, an institutional representation characteristic of Canadian monetary issues of this period.
The coin is struck in silver with a purity of 999.9‰, i.e. four-nine fine silver, guaranteeing exceptional metallic quality. Its weight is 31.39 grams, corresponding to the equivalent of a standard troy ounce for silver collectible coins. It features a Proof (BE) finish, characterised by mirror fields and frosted reliefs that highlight the engraving details and the colour fills applied to the reverse.
The mintage of this issue is limited to 5,000 pieces, making it a coin with restricted distribution. This limitation, combined with the specific cultural theme and the colour printing technique, makes it a numismatic collectible carefully documented in specialised catalogues.
