Dutch Silver Medal on Peace Negotiations with France, 1745
Obverse: Personification of the Dutch Republic seated on a rock, holding a fasces topped with a liberty cap in her right hand and a caduceus in her left. At her feet lie a bundle of arrows and broken weapons. Latin legend: "SALVS PVBLICA LEX SVPREMA" ("The public welfare is the supreme law").
Reverse: A monumental gate with doors being closed by a large hand holding a fasces. A soldier is seen inside the gate, withdrawing. Latin legend around: "CLAVDANTVR BELLI PORTAE" ("The gates of war are being closed"). In exergue: "1745".
Historical context:
This silver medal was struck in 1745, during the War of the Austrian Succession, as a hopeful expression of the peace negotiations then underway between the Dutch Republic and France.
